The Fielden family had for generations been engaged in the textile trade, and some members of the family had been very successful clothiers. Nicholas established himself as a master worsted manufacture at Edge End Farm on the tops over Todmorden. It was here that the son of one of his nephews, Joshua (1748 - 1811) trained up to the business and was to become the founder of the Fielden's dynasty.
Start at the centre of Todmorden where the roads from Burnley, Halifax and Rochdale meet at the roundabout. Listen to the first track before setting off down Rochdale Road.
Once you've listened to the commentary continue your journey.
150 metres down Rochdale Road is Todmorden Library, where the Rochdale Canal crosses under the road. Cross the canal, by the unusual guillotine lock gate, then bear right and take the canal towpath as it goes round the "Great Wall".
This is a good place to listen to the next track.
