When the Burnley Branch opened from Todmorden in 1849 this curve was the only connection between the Branch and the Main Line, but trains to and from Yorkshire had to reverse at Todmorden station to get onto and off the branch. With large numbers of long daily coal trains and then Blackpool Specials in summer this caused heavy congestion at the station.

The footpath leads further down the hill, onto a made road between houses to a junction on the left. Turn left onto Stansfield Road and follow this into the centre of Todmorden.
